A Note From Dr Aleks

Scars are memories. Some we’re proud of, and others we’d rather not carry on our skin. As a doctor, I look at scars through both a functional and an aesthetic lens. Some may interfere with movement or feel tight; others may be more of a textural or pigmentation concern. My role is to understand how your skin has healed, assess what it needs now and guide you through appropriate treatment options.

We treat a wide range of scars, including acne scars, post-surgical scars, stretch marks, trauma-related scars and some pigmentation-related marks. Some respond better than others, but even the most stubborn scars may benefit from targeted treatment.

Common Characteristics

  • Flat, raised or indented marks
  • Changes in skin colour or pigmentation
  • Itching, tightness or discomfort
  • Textural irregularities
  • Reduced mobility (in some cases, especially with surgical or burn scars)

Contributing Factors

  • Severity and depth of the original wound
  • Location on the body
  • Type of injury or procedure (e.g. surgery, acne, burns, trauma)
  • Genetic tendencies (some people are more prone to prominent scarring)
  • Delayed healing or infection
  • Skin type and tone
  • Tension across the healing area

Understanding Scarring

Scars form as part of the skin’s natural healing process. When the skin is injured, the body produces collagen to repair the wound. In some cases, the result is a flat, pale scar that blends in over time. In others, the scar may become raised (hypertrophic), overly pigmented, indented (atrophic) or extend beyond the wound’s boundaries (keloid).

Scars can also vary in how they feel. Some may become itchy or tight, while others interfere with movement. Treatments for scarring are most effective when tailored to the specific type of scar and your skin’s natural healing tendencies.
