Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is an effective solution for the removal of common skin lesions like skin tags and warts. This technique involves applying a controlled amount of extreme cold, typically using liquid nitrogen, to freeze the unwanted lesion. In just a few minutes, cryotherapy can help you achieve smoother, clearer and healthier-looking skin.

A Note From Dr Aleks

Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery or cryoablation, is one of our options for treating skin lesions. It’s quick, precise, suitable for most skin types and doesn’t require downtime. Best of all, it doesn’t involve any incisions or stitches, which means a lower risk of scarring and a faster recovery time.

Of course, it’s not the right fit for every lesion, but when it is, it’s an effective way to clear your skin without the downtime or fuss of more invasive procedures.

What Is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is performed using a specialised device that applies liquid nitrogen directly onto the lesion. The freezing process causes the tissue to break down and eventually fall away, allowing healthy skin to regenerate in its place. The treatment usually lasts just a few seconds per lesion, and the surrounding tissue is unaffected.

Any suspicious lesions will be thoroughly assessed before treatment. Cryotherapy is primarily used for benign lesions that have been properly evaluated.

Cryotherapy is suitable for nearly any external area, including:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Hands
  • Chest
  • Scalp
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Back
  • Feet

The OLA Experience

Consultation

Your first step is a consultation to assess the lesion you’d like removed. Dr Aleks or Dr Indi will examine your skin and the lesion, answer your questions and talk through your treatment options. If there’s any uncertainty about whether the lesion is benign, we may recommend a biopsy or refer you for further assessment before proceeding.

Preparation

During your consultation, we’ll let you know if there’s anything you need to do before your appointment, such as avoiding certain skincare products or minimising sun exposure. If you’re having multiple lesions treated or have a history of delayed healing, we may offer more targeted pre-treatment advice to suit your skin’s needs.

Treatment

You may experience a brief, intense cold sensation while the liquid nitrogen is applied, followed by a mild stinging or aching feeling. The application time often lasts only a few seconds per lesion, and the sensations subside quickly. You are free to go about your day after the treatment with simple aftercare instructions provided by our team.

What Is the Average Downtime and Recovery?

Cryotherapy requires little to no downtime. The area may turn white immediately after application, followed by redness, blistering or crusting over the next few days. This is a normal part of the healing process. Keep the area protected and avoid picking at any crust or scab that forms.

Most people can return to work and daily activities immediately. Full healing of the treated area takes about one to two weeks, depending on the size and location of the lesion.

What Results Can I Expect From Cryotherapy?

Once the treated lesion falls away, it is replaced by fresh, healthy-looking skin. Some patients may notice temporary pigmentation changes or mild scarring, but these usually fade with time.

One treatment is sufficient for most lesions. However, larger or more stubborn lesions may require more than one session. Most types of lesions that are treated successfully do not return.

Could Cryotherapy Be Right for Me?

Cryotherapy may be appropriate if you have benign skin lesions that are uncomfortable or cosmetically concerning. It can also be used for certain types of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Some lesions may need to be examined further to determine if they are suitable for freezing or should be removed using a different method.
