Minor Surgical Treatments
IUD Insertion
We offer IUD insertion services, providing a range of options for women seeking birth control. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are small, T-shaped devices that are inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. We provide three main types: the copper IUD, Mirena® and Kyleena®.
The copper IUD is hormone-free, using copper to create an environment that is toxic to sperm and potentially preventing fertilisation for up to 10 years. The Mirena IUD releases small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel, which thickens cervical mucus while thinning the uterine lining. This device can prevent pregnancy for up to eight years and may be recommended for women who are seeking other benefits, such as lighter periods. With Mirena, bleeding and spotting may increase at first with a possible decrease in the following months.
Kyleena IUDs are a low-hormone option that also uses levonorgestrel to prevent pregnancy. This option lasts for up to five years and is smaller than Mirena for easier insertion, but is not used as a treatment for heavy periods.
Implanon Insertion & Removal
Implanon is a small, flexible rod that is placed just under the skin of the upper arm. It is a contraceptive option that releases a steady dose of the hormone etonogestrel. This hormone works to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking the sperm from reaching the egg. We offer both Implanon insertion and removal services along with counseling and advice on this option.
Implanon is usually inserted on your non-dominant arm on the inner side. The insertion area is sanitised and treated with a local anaesthetic. Next, the skin is punctured using an implant device and the implant is positioned under the skin. Once the implant is in place, it can prevent pregnancy for up to three years.
When you are ready to discontinue the use of Implanon or wish to become pregnant, we can also remove the device. We will numb the area with a local anaesthetic, make a small incision and pull the implant out. It is possible to get pregnant right away after removal, so another method of birth control will be needed if you do not wish to get pregnant.
Nonscalpel Vasectomy
If family planning is a focus for you, you may be looking for a more permanent form of birth control. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure for men that separates the tubes that transport sperm from the testicles to the urethra. These tubes, called the vas deferens, are cut, sealed or blocked to prevent sperm from mixing with semen. After the procedure, sperm is no longer present in semen during ejaculation.
Vasectomies involve a small incision on the scrotum along with a cut and sutures on the vas deferens. This process is performed under local anaesthesia. Vasectomies do not affect hormone levels, sexual performance or libido.
As you search for the right birth control for you, be sure to discuss your options with your doctor. Vasectomy reversals are possible in many cases but are not always successful. Vasectomies do not protect against STIs, so additional protection may still be needed.
Skin Lump/Cyst Excisions
Abnormal growths such as moles, cysts, warts and lipomas can cause discomfort and cosmetic concerns. Whether a lesion is benign or suspicious, removing it can help prevent potential health issues and improve the appearance of the skin. Our surgical excisions focus on removal and recovery with techniques that are adjusted to each patient’s situation.
During a skin lesion removal procedure, we will carefully evaluate the lesion and determine the appropriate approach. For small or superficial lesions, we may use simple excision techniques, cryotherapy or other devices. For larger or deeper lesions, we use more advanced excision techniques, especially if the lesion is cancerous or precancerous.
While there may be some scarring depending on the scope of the procedure, we use techniques that minimise scarring as much as possible. We also promote a smooth healing process by educating you about proper care. After the removal, tissue is sometimes sent for biopsy to confirm its nature and assess any further treatment needs.
Skin Tag Removal
Skin tags are small, soft growths that commonly appear in areas where skin folds or experiences friction. While harmless, they can cause discomfort or aesthetic concerns, particularly when they catch on clothing or jewellery. We offer several methods for removing skin tags safely and effectively.
During your consultation, we will examine the skin tag and recommend the most appropriate removal method based on its size, location and characteristics. Treatment options may include cryotherapy (freezing), cauterisation or surgical excision. Most procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort, with minimal recovery time needed afterwards.
Vaginal Skin Tag Removal
Skin tags can appear anywhere on the body, including around the vagina. Vaginal skin tags often appear on the inner or outer vaginal lips, on the inner thighs or around the anus. While benign, they can cause discomfort and concerns about appearance. Skin tags may sometimes be mistaken for genital warts, so a proper diagnosis is important before treatment.
Depending on the size, location and other factors, skin tags can be removed through freezing, burning or excision. Procedures are performed with local anaesthesia to minimise discomfort. We will walk you through your treatment beforehand so you know what to expect and can be as comfortable as possible during the process.
After the procedure, we will provide you with instructions to help you care for the site. Freezing or cauterisation may come with a shorter healing time, while excision may require a longer recovery. During your consultation, we can discuss recovery and how long you will need to wait before resuming normal activities and sexual intercourse.
